Living Wisdom School Rules – by, Lori Wise

The Living Wisdom School at Ananda in Palo Alto, California, a private school for grades pre-k through 8th grade, have bright yellow cards with the school “rules” printed on them.  The school is located just outside the studio where I teach yoga at Ananda.  I picked up one of these lively cards the other day after class.  The words on this cheerful paper delighted my Soul!  These are excellent rules to live by, even for those beyond 8th grade:

  • Enjoy yourself
  • Practice kindness
  • Choose happiness
  • Be a loving friend
  • Laugh often
  • Be a life-long learner
  • Trust yourself
  • Use your will to create good energy
  • Find the Joy within

How wonderful would it be if more adults adopted these rules?  It’s so easy to get caught up with all the ‘to-do’s’, the busy-ness of the days/weeks/months/years, and all too soon, stress abounds from trying to please everyone around us and get our jobs done.  Perhaps starting the day reading over these simple and uplifting Living Wisdom School Rules, the flavor of the day would start with a positive, upbeat note.  Maybe the stressful parts of the day wouldn’t feel quite so overwhelming when remembering to “Find the Joy within”. “Laughing often” would certainly lighten any office tension that may have worked it’s way into the day.  My favorite, “Trust yourself”, is one I am learning to do more with each passing day.  I wish I had learned this ‘Rule’ somewhere between the ages of pre-k and 8th grade.  Fortunately, it’s never too late to learn new ways of Being in the world ….. ways that come from a foundation of Joy and Love, instead of self-doubt and fear.

Go ahead.  Give it a try.  Read the Living Wisdom School Rules every morning before starting the day this week and see what happens.  Was your week influenced by the Rules? Did you notice any difference in your reaction to events this week?  Share your comments and experiences below.

Aum ~ Peace ~ Amen
